Accusations by the Turkish opposition that Russia allegedly interfered in the presidential elections in Turkey are unacceptable, said Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation.

“The opposition leader said he had evidence [российского вмешательства]. He still hasn’t presented them. We are sure that he will not be able to do this, because they actually do not exist, ” said a representative of the Kremlin (quote from RIA Novosti).

Peskov added that Russia respects the choice of the people of Turkey, and also cherishes the level of bilateral relations that has been achieved in recent years. The accusations of the Turkish opposition only cause disappointment, he said.

On May 12, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu to be ashamed of allegations of Russian interference in Turkey’s presidential election.

General elections in Turkey are scheduled for May 14. They will be attended by the current head of state Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the leader of the CHP Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, as well as the candidate from the nationalist alliance Sinan Ogan.

On May 11, the leader of the Turkish Fatherland Party, Muharrem Ince, announced his decision not to participate in the May 14 presidential elections. According to him, he “resisted” for 45 days, during which he survived more than in 45 years. Ince accused opponents of trying to destroy his reputation. Erdogan later said that he was saddened by this decision of the politician.
