The Kremlin called on other countries to influence Ukraine to stop the shelling of the ZNPP

Moscow is concerned about the aggravation of the situation around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, all countries of the world need to influence Kyiv so that the Ukrainian military stops shelling the plant. This statement was made by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.

“This cannot but cause our concern. <...> We call on the countries of the world to use their influence so that the Ukrainian armed forces stop doing this,” Peskov said.

The Kremlin spokesman also pointed to the “extreme concern” of the IAEA due to the numerous shelling of the ZNPP.

Active shelling of the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant by the armed forces of Ukraine (AFU) resumed on November 19 and 20. By words Adviser to the Director General of the Rosenergoatom Concern Renat Karchaa, 15 overflights were recorded, including the special building No. 2, where fresh nuclear fuel is stored.

In this regard, the head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, called for an “immediate stop” to the shelling of the station. “Whoever is behind this should stop immediately. As I have said many times, you are playing with fire.” emphasized he.

During a special operation in Ukraine, the Russian military took control of a part of the Zaporozhye region, including the city of Energodar, which houses the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the ZNPP. The IAEA mission arrived at the station on September 1 due to regular shelling from Ukraine.

On September 6, the agency published a report on the results of its visit to ZNPP. The organization called for an end to attacks on the station and the establishment of a safe zone around it. At the same time, experts did not specify who was shelling the object. The report also says that several events have been recorded at the ZNPP since the spring that violate the principles of nuclear safety, and that members of the delegation themselves witnessed the shelling.

In addition, on November 17, the IAEA Board of Governors accepted a resolution urging Russia to abandon “unfounded claims” to the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. The organization believes that Russia should withdraw all its military and civilian personnel from the territory of the station and transfer control over the facility to Ukraine. Peskov later said that despite the resolution, Russia would continue to communicate with the agency. November 20 Grossi announced new trips to Russia, Ukraine, as well as to ZNPP in order to ensure safety at the facility.
