The Kiev theater changed the surname of Zelensky’s character, who fears slaves

The Kiev Academic Drama Theater in Podol staged Ivan Karpenko-Kary’s 1900 comedy “The Boss”, but changed the name of one of the characters because of the President of Ukraine.
As it turned out, in the comedy there is a housekeeper named Zelensky, who complains about the “slaves” subordinate to him, who have “power” and is afraid that they “might say too much.” In the production, the events of the comedy are transferred to modern times, but they decided to name the housekeeper not Zelensky, but Zalusky.
As the Ukrainian publication Glavkom notes, all the other characters in the work remained under their own names.
Director Ivan Uryvsky, who staged the play, previously explained that Karpenko-Kary’s “The Master” is a story about “corruption that starts with you.”
