The Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) will not allow CSKA goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov to play the new season due to sanctions from the International Ice Hockey Federation. This was stated by the President of the KHL Alexei Morozov.
“At the moment, the league does not allow him to play on September 1, as there is a disqualification,” Mr. Morozov said at a briefing. “Fedotov signed the contract, the league registered him, the Russian Hockey Federation (FHR) approved the application, but with a note of disqualification until December 31,” he added. According to him, CSKA lawyers are now solving this issue.
In 2022, Ivan Fedotov, after winning the Gagarin Cup as part of CSKA, signed a contract with the Philadelphia Flyers club, but then the goalkeeper was detained at the military enlistment office and sent to a military unit for military service. In the summer of 2023, after the service, the hockey player announced that he wanted to continue playing for CSKA. On July 8, 2023, the KHL registered a new contract with CSKA. However, the National Hockey League and Philadelphia insist that the hockey player’s agreement from 2022 should be valid in the 2023/24 season.
After that, the International Ice Hockey Federation imposed sanctions on the hockey player and allowed him to play for CSKA only from January 1, 2024. In addition, the hockey player was suspended for four months, and CSKA was banned from international transfers for a year. CSKA filed an appeal against this decision. However, CSKA head coach Sergei Fedorov said that Ivan Fedotov will be able to play in the KHL championship against Ak Bars in Moscow on September 1.
Ivan Fedotov is 26 years old. As part of the Russian national team, he became the silver medalist of the Beijing Olympics.
