The International Disciplinary Commission ordered the Russian gymnast Ivan Kulyak to pay 2,000 Swiss francs towards legal costs. The athlete in March at the World Cup in Doha went to the awards ceremony with the letter Z on the form.
The governor of the Kaluga region, Vladislav Shapsha, volunteered to pay the costs for the athlete. “He aroused pride among millions of Russians,” the governor wrote on his Telegram channel. “Of course, Ivan understood what awaited him, but he boldly expressed the position of a patriot of the Motherland.”
The head of the region recalled that they met with the gymnast in May, and at the same time he said that he was ready to pay these costs. “Ivan’s bill came at the end of December, and I will soon pay it from my own funds,” the governor said.
The International Gymnastics Federation previously suspended the gymnast for a year.
