NASA James Webb Telescope discovered the presence of methane and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18b, 8.6 times the size of Earth.
Scientists believe that the discovery suggests the presence of large amounts of hydrogen in the atmosphere of K2-18b, on the surface of which there is water. This, in turn, may indicate the existence of the Hycean planets – hot cosmic bodies with an ocean on the surface.
Some astronomers, Webb said in a press release, believe that such conditions are a “promising environment” for searching for evidence of life on exoplanets.
Exoplanets are located outside the solar system. K2-18b orbits the cool dwarf star K2-18 120 light-years from Earth. The star is located in the constellation Leo.
