The head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, said following a meeting of the IOC Executive Committee that invitations to neutral athletes from Russia to the Paris Olympic Games will be coordinated with international and, if necessary, national sporting situations. According to him, the removal of the Russian Olympic Committee from the activities of the IOC will not in any way affect the athletes themselves, because they have nothing to do with the inclusion of the councils of the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions in the ROC.
“Time is not pressing on us, we reserve the right to invite neutral athletes with Russian passports, the ROC will not play any role here, invitations will be direct in agreement with international federations and, if necessary, national federations. They will not represent either Russia or the ROC, they are strictly individual and neutral athletes,” Mr. Bach told reporters (quoted from “RIA News”).
October 12 IOC suspended OCD “until further notice”. The reason for the removal was the decision of the ROC on October 5 to include sports organizations from the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. These subjects have been part of the Russian Federation since September 30, 2022. The ROC called the IOC decision “counterproductive” and political.
