The IOC told when they will decide on the admission of Russia to the Olympics

An extraordinary session of the IOC was held with discussions about the fate of world sport, which is under threat, and the IOC itself, which, according to President Bach, was “between two fires.” For Russia, everything remains as it was: the issue of admission and qualifying tournaments for the Olympic Games has not been resolved.
What did Thomas Bach say?
The rhetoric of the IOC President has not changed in recent months. The content of answers to questions or speeches is approximately the same. But there was also an additional nerve. Despite the recommendations of the IOC, Bach believes, the organization is faced with two conflicting parties. Russia wants us to “ignore the military conflict.” And I am sure that the sanctions are unfair and biased. Ukraine wants to “completely isolate and exclude Russia” wherever possible. Both positions, Bach argues, are not rational.
“A huge number of representatives of federations and athletes ask us to protect the rights of all athletes and find the right way out of the situation. Everyone who follows the rules should be able to compete. Our values and the strength of the Olympic Movement are at stake, nothing else.” Russia, says the IOC President, “questions the neutrality of the IOC, but we must continue to work.”
Bach is concerned that world sport is under serious threat today: if someone from the outside decides who is allowed and who is not allowed, then only those who coincide in political views will compete. And this already leads to the fact that there will be different competitions for friendly countries in politics. “Then the Olympics would simply cease to make sense.”
If states start to decide which athletes can take part in competitions, this will lead to “the impossibility of holding world tournaments in the broad sense of the word“ world ”.
The IOC President said that no one wants athletes to suffer because of the actions of their government. He thanked the international taekwondo and judo federations, which held world championships with the participation of Russians and athletes from Belarus, following the recommendations of the IOC for admission. And he stressed that he “liked” how these competitions went. “I would like other federations to take note of this as well.”
Bach also “categorically cannot understand” why the Ukrainian government deprives its athletes of the opportunity to qualify for the Olympics and delight the fans. “They were absent from the same judo and taekwondo tournaments. They were not allowed by their own government, they were sanctioned by their own.”
And the actions of Poland, which did not issue visas to Russians to participate in competitions (Bulgaria was forced to hold an individual fencing tournament instead of Poland), he called “discrimination”. At the same time, he stressed that the IOC, as a global organization, must weigh all the points. “The world is not divided into white and black. We must not give in to pressure.”
Nothing has changed for Russia
According to Bach, he and French President Emmanuel Macron have agreed to cooperate in the issue of allowing our athletes to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games, “but only in a neutral status.”
“The decision will not be easy, but in politics this cannot be,” Thomas Bach said about the admission of our athletes to the Olympic Games. Only the naive believe that this happens. From the first day we condemn the NWO and the actions of the Russian and Belarusian governments, but the world is not black or white. The IOC is caught in a situation between two warring parties.”
On the eve of Thomas Bach’s speech, IOC Communications Director Mark Adams at a press conference following the meeting of the Executive Committee noted several points. The decision on the participation of our athletes in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games has not been made, “we still have enough time.” The question of the admission of Russian athletes and its criteria will be decided later. For now, the IOC wants to see how the situation develops. According to Adams, you need to be flexible because it is constantly changing. “You want us to set a time frame: we will make a decision at the right time.”
And in terms of the qualification of Russian athletes for Paris 2024 – and it is already in full swing, there are no decisions yet. “Each federation has its own situation, but they are independent, so they are free to make their own decisions, we hope that they will follow our recommendations.”
Tarpishchev, Isinbayeva, Popov and even Smirnov
Half expected information: the IOC ethics committee will check the current members of the organization of the President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev and two-time Olympic pole vault champion Elena Isinbayeva. And this will be done in order to avoid the use of different approaches in relation to athletes and officials from Russia and IOC members from Russia.
The IOC Ethics Commission concluded that it would take two conditions from the recommendations. Will check whether there is active support from Tarpishchev and Isinbayeva for military operations and contractual obligations with military structures (only in the period after February 24, 2022).
Shamil Tarpishchev has been a member of the IOC since 1994, his term should end in 2028 (upon reaching the age of 80). Elena Isinbaeva next year will celebrate eight years in the organization.
Moreover, the check will also go on with respect to the honorary members of the IOC – Vitaly Smirnov and four-time Olympic champion Alexander Popov. Vitaly Georgievich was elected to the IOC in 1971, and became an honorary member in 2016. And Popov was an active member of the IOC from 2000 to 2016.
