The International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed disagreement with the words of Russian President Vladimir Putin about ethnic discrimination against Russian athletes. The IOC emphasized that participation in the Olympics is not a human right, and the restrictions were a response to violations by Russia and Belarus.
“Participation in the Olympic Games is in no way a human right, and the recent amendment to the Olympic Charter (on the neutral status of Russians and Belarusians – “Ъ”.) is not related to this,” says the IOC press release (quoted from TASS).
The IOC believes that the rules on the neutral status of Russian and Belarusian athletes do not contradict the Olympic Charter (the fundamental list of rules approved by the IOC). The committee said it “strongly rejects allegations that these measures constitute ethnic discrimination.”
The day before, Vladimir Putin at the international forum “Russia is a Sports Power” in Perm noted, that games can be used as pressure “as blatant and in fact racist, ethnic discrimination.” He was also outraged that the committee perceived an invitation to the Olympics as a privilege rather than a right.
In March 2023, the Olympic Committee recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to participate in international competitions. This is due to the introduction of Russian troops into Ukraine. A year later the IOC recommended allow athletes from Belarus and Russia to compete in a neutral status.
