The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommends that National Olympic Committees (NOCs) not participate in the World Friendship Games in Russia. This was stated by James McLeod, Director of the IOC Department for Relations with NOCs, drawing attention to the “growing politicization of world sport.”
“Any participation of NOCs in the World Friendship Games would be contrary not only to the recommendation of the IOC Executive Board of February 25, 2022 regarding international sporting events held in Russia, but also to the collective goal of the Olympic movement – maintaining the independence and autonomy of sport,” said Mr. McLeod (quote By Inside the Games).
The Friendship Games are scheduled to take place from September 15 to 29, 2024 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. The prize fund of friendship competitions is 4.6 billion rubles. For victory there will be $40 thousand, for second place – $30 thousand, for third – $20 thousand. Moscow will host the bulk of the competition, mainly they will be held at the Luzhniki Stadium. Ekaterinburg will host competitions in athletics, aquatics and judo.
28 March IOC Executive Committee recommended international federations to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes who do not support military actions in Ukraine to participate, but in a neutral status. In October, the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee for an indefinite period due to the inclusion of the Olympic Councils of the DPR and LPR, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions. The Russian Olympic movement called this “a good reason to sue.”
