The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes be allowed to participate in international competitions in a neutral status. This was announced by the president of the organization Thomas Bach at a press conference following the meeting of the executive committee. At the same time, the recommendations do not apply to the 2024 Olympics – a decision on it will be made later.
“International sports tournaments should be held in an atmosphere of peace and tolerance, without discrimination. It is impossible to apply sanctions only on the basis of a passport or belonging to a particular nation. The IOC Executive Committee calls on international federations to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as individual neutral athletes,” said Mr. Bach. Also in its recommendations, the IOC emphasized that athletes collaborating with the army or supporting the special operation cannot be admitted.
Earlier, on the eve of the meeting of the executive committee, Mr. Bach said that the participation of Russian athletes in competitions in a neutral status turned out to be a “working option”. According to the head of the IOC, such a system is practiced in many tournaments in different sports and does not provoke “security incidents.”
“We cannot find a solution that suits everyone. We may have to live with this, ”summed up Mr. Bach (quoted from Reuters).
In March 2022, the IOC recommended international sports federations to remove Russians and Belarusians from tournaments. At the beginning of 2023, the organization advocated for the admission of athletes to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Against spoke about 30 states.
