Members of the Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on June 22 voted against the recognition of the International Boxing Association (IBA). It is headed by the Russian Umar Kremlev. This association remained one of the few who allowed Russians to compete under their auspices without restrictions.
69 people voted in favor of revoking IBA recognition at an extraordinary session of the IOC Executive Committee, one voted against, 10 people abstained from voting, TASS reports.
In addition, members of the IOC Executive Committee recommended that the IBA be banned from hosting a boxing tournament at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. IOC Director General Christophe de Koepper has called for the IBA to be stripped of its right to host a boxing tournament at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
In the spring of 2022, the IOC recommended that international sports federations remove Russians from participating in competitions. However, in the fall of 2022, the IBA lifted this ban and allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete under their own flag. This led to a boycott of the Tashkent World Championship by 17 countries, including those that play a leading role in boxing, such as the US and the UK. In this regard, the IOC announced the need for sanctions against the IBA.
IBA in the statute of the world’s main boxing structure, recognized by the International Olympic Committee, may soon replace the World Boxing association, created in the spring of 2023 by countries that boycotted official IBA competitions.
