The International Olympic Committee has not yet made a decision on the admission of athletes from Russia and Belarus to the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Now the IOC is discussing the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the Asian Games, which will be held this fall, said press office Olympic Committee in the format of questions and answers.
The IOC said it was not ready to speculate about the admission of athletes to the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris. “But one thing is clear: we are not talking about Russian or Belarusian athletes, we are talking about neutral athletes who comply with the strict conditions that we have set, including the absence of any identification with their country and the National Olympic Committee and full compliance with anti-doping rules,” the press service said.
In February 2022, against the backdrop of the entry of Russian troops into Ukraine, the IOC recommended that international sports federations not allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions. Olympic Council of Asia offered Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Asian Games on January 26.
Also in January, IOC President Thomas Bach admitted the possibility of participation of athletes from Russia and Belarus in international tournaments. True, it will be possible only in a neutral status and if the athlete is not seen in the “active support” of the CBO.
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky invited Mr. Bach to visit Bakhmut (Artemovsk) and said that he was disappointed with his words about the need to allow all athletes to compete. In Ukraine, they are also going to discuss the possibility of a boycott of the Paris Olympics in 2024 if Russian athletes are admitted to it.
