Sports competitions can be organized without the participation of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), since the organization does not have a monopoly. This was stated by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the IOC’s warning to athletes regarding participation in the Friendship Games.
“In the IOC acronym, the letter “M” does not mean a monopoly on the sports world. The sports world is multifaceted and involves different formats, including without the context of the IOC,” said Mr. Peskov.
The press secretary emphasized that, despite the current position of the IOC regarding Russian athletes, Russia will continue contacts with the organization.
The Friendship Games will be held from September 15 to 29, 2024 in Moscow and Yekaterinburg. The prize fund of the competition is 4.6 billion rubles. There will be $40 thousand for winning, $30 thousand for second place, and $20 thousand for third place.
Today, November 15, IOC recommended national Olympic committees not to take part in the World Friendship Games in Russia. According to the IOC, the abandonment of Russian sporting events is necessary to “preserve the independence and autonomy of sport.” In March 2022, the IOC recommended that Russian and Belarusian athletes should not be allowed to participate in international competitions, but a year later they allowed them to participate in a neutral status. After the annexation of new regions to the territory of Russia, the IOC suspended the Russian Olympic Committee for an indefinite period. November 6 Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted appeal by the national committee against the IOC decision.
