IOC head Bach called on not to punish their athletes by boycotting the 2024 Olympics
President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Thomas Bach responded to Ukraine’s intention to boycott the 2024 Olympic Games due to the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in competitions.
“Why should Ukraine punish its own athletes because of a military conflict and take away their dream of the Olympic Games?” – said the head of the IOC in an interview with Welt am Sonnatag.
Bach emphasized that not complying with all the demands of Ukraine does not mean supporting the conflict in the country, and also added that the international sports organization has been on the side of Ukrainian athletes since the beginning of the Russian special operation.
At the same time, commenting on the IOC’s decision to admit Russian and Belarusian athletes to the competition, Bach noted that it did not fully suit either side.
This month, the IOC decided to admit athletes from the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in a neutral status. At the same time, the Ministry of Sports of Ukraine noted that the country in this case may refuse to participate in the competition.
