The IOC allowed the introduction of sanctions against athletes for participating in the Russian Friendship Games

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) does not deny the possibility of introducing sanctions against athletes who will take part in the Russian Friendship Games, said James McLeod, director of the department for relations with national Olympic committees. He added that now the IOC is only issuing a warning to athletes; the issue of possible sanctions will be discussed later.

“As for sanctions, if there are any, this issue should be considered in more detail by the IOC Executive Committee. Much will depend on the severity of the violations,” he said (quoted by “Interfax”).

Shortly before this IOC published a statement in which he accused Russia of politicizing sports and called on athletes not to take part in the Friendship Games. The World Anti-Doping Agency also commented Russia’s plans to host the Games and urged athletes to exercise caution “and not legitimize this event.” The World Friendship Games will be held in Moscow and Yekaterinburg from September 15 to 29. They include competitions in 33 summer sports.
