The Main Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee filed a petition with the Basmanny Court for the arrest in absentia of one of the key defendants in the case of the former governor of the Khabarovsk Territory, Sergei Furgal, convicted of organizing contract killings. We are talking about an authoritative businessman, Mikhail Timofeev, who is hiding from the investigation.
As MK learned, Timofeev’s case was separated into separate proceedings. First he was accused of being on a nationwide and then international wanted list. Let us recall that Furgal himself was sentenced to 22 years in prison for organizing the murders of businessmen Evgeny Zori and Oleg Bulatov, as well as an attempt on the life of another businessman.
According to investigators, Timofeev’s role was that through him Furgal found the perpetrator of crimes, in particular, the murder of businessman Zori.
Furgal himself claimed during the court hearing that Timofeev was formally his assistant when the future governor was a State Duma deputy. Moreover, the accused stated that he was asked to register Timofeev for work by intelligence officers. He himself remembered what Timofeev’s documents looked like, but could not remember whether he met the “assistant” in person.
At the same time, Timofeev was well acquainted with the murdered Evgeniy Zorey. According to the businessman’s widow, they served in the army together and became friends there. When Zorya was suing Furgal, Timofeev helped him resolve a number of issues during the process.
Most likely, it was not by chance that the investigation came up with a request for arrest in absentia. Perhaps Timofeev is hiding in another country, and the Investigative Committee plans to seek his extradition. From a procedural point of view, it is important that at the time the suspect is detained, there is a warrant for his arrest. Otherwise, he may be questioned and immediately released.
