The International Volleyball Federation will not pay compensation to Russia for the cancellation of the World Cup

Compensation for the cancellation of the World Championship in Volleyball among men’s teams, which was supposed to be held in Russia from August 26 to September 11, will not be paid to the Russian side by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). According to the Secretary General of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation (VVF) Alexander Yaremenko, according to the agreement, the FIVB had to pay Russia $20 million.

“Initially, the position of the FIVB was that the World Championship was canceled due to force majeure … This clause states that in the event of the championship being canceled, half of the entry fee is returned to the applicant. Of the $40 million that Russia paid, $20 million should be returned,” Mr. Yaremenko told TASS.

According to him, later the FIVB changed its position on the reasons for the cancellation of the championship in Russia, because of which the Russian side may be guilty of postponing the tournament. “Now Russia can become the guilty party of this cancellation, and not force majeure. Like, we could file our counterclaim for 15 million, but we don’t, the championship is canceled, and that’s it, ”said the agency’s interlocutor.

Russia lost the right to host the volleyball world championship this year due to the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the competition was to be held in 10 cities of the country. The championship was moved to Poland and Slovenia. VFV in connection with the cancellation of the tournament filed a lawsuit in a Swiss civil court demanding $80 million in damages from the FIVB.
