The International Gymnastics Federation will adhere to the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on the admission of Russian gymnasts to international competitions in a neutral status. This was reported by the press service of the federation.

“We have a responsibility to protect the rights of athletes from any kind of discrimination in accordance with the Olympic Charter. We have many obstacles to overcome before allowing Russian and Belarusian gymnasts to compete internationally, but sport makes impossible things possible,”— declared federation president Morinari Watanabe.

“I believe that friendship and solidarity within the Olympic Movement will contribute to world peace,” he added.

On February 28, 2022, a few days after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the IOC recommended that international sports federations remove Russian and Belarusian athletes from participation in competitions. On January 25, the IOC proposed to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in international competitions who do not actively support the fighting in Ukraine. The IOC allowed the participation of such athletes before the competition in a neutral status.
