World Aquatics ratifies Kolesnikov’s 50m backstroke world record

The International Aquatics Federation (World Aquatics) has ratified the world record of Kliment Kolesnikov in the 50-meter backstroke. Confirmation of the record is announced on the organization’s official website.

On July 27, in the final of the Russian Cup in Kazan, Kolesnikov set a world record of 23.55 seconds. Thus, the Russian surpassed the achievement of American Hunter Armstrong (23.71).

In 2022, athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus were suspended from international competitions due to the situation in Ukraine. Last year, World Aquatics allowed swimmers from two countries to compete, but only in neutral status and only in individual starts.

23-year-old Kolesnikov is a silver (100m backstroke) and bronze (100m freestyle) medalist at the Tokyo Olympics. He is a six-time world short course champion and a six-time European champion.
