The Indian lunar rover, part of the Chandrayaan-3 space mission, has successfully completed its current tasks on the surface of the moon and has been put into sleep mode until September 22, the Indian Space Research Organization said on Saturday on its X social media account.
The organization said the rover is safely parked and goes into sleep mode after completing its assigned tasks. The solar receiver will remain on and will be oriented to receive light at the next sunrise, which is expected on September 22nd.
If the awakening is successful, the rover will start performing new tasks. Otherwise, he will remain on the moon forever, becoming the “lunar ambassador of India”.
India became the first country in the world to successfully land a spacecraft on the south pole of the moon on 23 August. The Chandrayaan-3 space mission launched its robotic space station on July 14 and reached lunar orbit on August 5. Vikram, the station’s descent module, separated from the orbital module on August 17 and successfully completed a series of maneuvers to lower its orbit before landing. The lunar rover, known as Pragyan, was flown to the moon aboard the Vikram and successfully landed on the surface of Earth’s natural satellite.
