The Indian lunar rover Pragyan has transmitted the first scientific data after landing on the south pole of the moon. The temperature on the surface was unexpectedly high – the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) believed that it would be at the level of 20-30 ° C, but it was 70 ° C.
The device measures the temperature of the upper layer of the lunar soil. It is equipped with a sensor with a mechanism that can measure the temperature of the soil at a depth of up to 10 cm, according to a post by ISRO on the X social network. The publication provides a temperature graph – the first such “profile of the south pole of the moon.”
ISRO employee Bee Darukesha told Press Trust of Indiathat the temperature was “surprisingly higher than we expected.”
The Lunokhod reached the Earth satellite on August 23 aboard the lander of the Chandrayaan-3 station. India has become the first country to make a soft landing at the Moon’s South Pole. When trying to land in the area on August 20 crashed Russian station “Luna-25”.
