The Assembly of States Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court issued a statement commenting on Russia’s decision to initiate criminal proceedings against ICC judges Tomoko Akane, Rosario Aytala and Sergio Godines, as well as prosecutor Karim Khan.
The assembly’s presidency expressed “deep concern” and said it viewed Russia’s actions as an “act of intimidation” and an attempt to “undermine the powers of the ICC.”
On March 20, it was reported that the Russian Investigative Committee opened a case against the prosecutor and judges of the ICC. The statement of the Russian department specified that the prosecutor sent a petition to the Pre-Trial Chamber to obtain a warrant for the arrest of Russian citizens, and the judges issued “illegal decisions to arrest the President of the Russian Federation (Vladimir Putin) and the Commissioner for the Rights of the Russian Federation under the President of the Russian Federation (Maria Lvova- Belova)”.
May 19 Karim Khan was put on the wanted list.
