On the night of October 25, powerful explosions occurred in the area of the Khmelnitsky Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) in western Ukraine, reported Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi.
According to IAEA experts present at the plant, the air raid alert was announced at 1:26 local time, due to the explosions, many windows at the facility were broken, and the power supply to some radiation monitoring stations outside the KhNPP was suspended.
“This incident once again highlights the extremely dangerous situation with nuclear safety in Ukraine <...> It is necessary to avoid getting into a nuclear power plant at all costs,” Grossi said.
There was no direct impact on the facility; KhNPP continued its work.
In early October, the IAEA carried out The 12th rotation of observers as part of its mission at the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which came under Russian control in 2022. At the beginning of October 2022, after the Zaporozhye region became part of Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered that the plant’s facilities be taken into federal ownership and created FSUE “Zaporozhye NPP” to ensure the safety of nuclear facilities.
