The IAEA is launching a program to help Ukrainians affected by the destruction of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, said IAEA head Rafael Grossi. His words are quoted by the British edition of the BBC.

Grossi himself will personally lead the mission of assistance to Ukraine in the coming days and will present a corresponding plan to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

These measures are reportedly taken in response to recent requests from Kyiv for international assistance to flood-hit areas. The head of the IAEA also intends to make another visit to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which receives water needed to cool reactors and spent fuel pools from a nearby thermal power plant, which, in turn, takes it from a reservoir adjacent to a broken dam.

As already reported, the water level in the reservoir dropped sharply after the dam broke, and this worries experts.

On the night of June 6, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (APU) on June 6 launched a series of attacks on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, destroying the upper part of the station. The dam was not damaged, however, an uncontrolled discharge of water began, as a result of which the leadership of the Kherson region was forced to announce the evacuation of the population from the flooded territories. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the destruction of the power plant provoked a large-scale environmental and humanitarian catastrophe. As a result, areas both controlled by Russia and those controlled by the Kiev regime were flooded.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian president, said that one of the goals of the bombing was connected with an attempt by Ukraine to deprive Crimea of ​​water. And Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu noted that Kyiv blew up the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station, as it weakened its positions in the Kherson direction, transferring troops to the offensive area.
