The Hungarian Foreign Ministry named the conditions for approval of a new package of EU anti-Russian sanctions

Hungary will not agree to the 12th package of EU sanctions against Russia if it concerns oil and gas. About it stated Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations of Hungary Peter Szijjártó in an interview with RIA Novosti.

“The red line for us obviously concerns energy, gas, oil, nuclear energy and any other aspects that could harm our state economy,” the minister said.

According to him, the sanctions policy “simply does not work” and the restrictions are “definitely causing great harm to the European economy.” Szijjártó also commented on personal sanctions.

“Someone who has done something good for Hungary, someone who has saved the lives of Hungarians, for example by making it possible to buy vaccines, or those who play an important role in ensuring the security of our energy supply – why would we put them on the sanctions list, knowing that these people have not done anything bad to our country,” the head of the Foreign Ministry indicated the country’s position.

The Hungarian authorities have repeatedly spoken out about the ineffectiveness of the sanctions imposed against Moscow. 15 October Szijjarto statedthat European sanctions failed to bring the Russian economy to its knees. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Hungary will veto any initiatives of EU anti-Russian sanctions in the field of nuclear energy.

28 October Szijjarto reportedthat the third batch of nuclear fuel in 2023 was delivered to Hungary from Russia, bypassing the territory of Ukraine. The country received fuel from Rosatom for the Paks nuclear power plant on the banks of the Danube along the route through Bulgaria and Romania. According to the minister, as a result, a fuel reserve has been created for a “sufficiently long period.”
