The head of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s Office, Gergely Gulyas, said that the country’s authorities welcome the statement of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said that the entry of Soviet troops into Budapest in 1956 was a mistake.

Putin commented on the entry of Soviet troops into Hungary and Czechoslovakia (in 1956 and 1968, respectively) at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF).

“We have long recognized that this part of the policy of the Soviet Union was erroneous and only led to tension in relations,” Putin said, expressing the point of view that “the leading Western countries are stepping on this rake today.”

Guillas praised Putin’s words at the government briefing.
