The Board of the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) supported the idea of returning the limit of five foreign players in the Kontinental Hockey League in the 2024/25 season, they reported TASS in the press service of the organization. The decision was made almost unanimously. Currently there is a limit of three foreign players.

Now the FHR must contact the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation to amend the order. The document must be approved by the Ministry of Justice. Following this, the KHL will be able to notify Russian clubs about increasing the limit for the next season.

Russian KHL teams can enter no more than three foreigners into their match roster starting from the 2023/24 season. In February 2024, 15 of the 20 KHL clubs voted for increasing the limit on foreign players from three to five players. The clubs considered that a quota of five foreign players would be optimal.
