The history of the creation and popularity of one of the most beloved entertainments of our time

Roulette is a gambling entertainment known all over the world. It got its name from the French word “roulette” – “wheel”. The inhabitants of France came up with and improved the game in the 18th century.

The appearance of the game

Gabriel de Sartine was a police officer looking for alternative ways to gamble. He wanted to offer players the opportunity to win without the scams and cheating that were common in those days. Gambling is illegal

Everything briefly returned to normal after Napoleon came to power. But in 1839, gambling was again outlawed. In times of relaxation, the Blanc brothers made their contribution to the roulette. They came up with a way to get additional profit from roulette – they changed the bottom of the drum, making it movable. The croupier could click on it, thereby choosing the winning sector for the ball. Brothers:

• Opened the doors of the Hamburg casino;
• reduced the share of the gambling house to 2.7%;
• “settled” the players in the casino, who hourly added profit to the institution.

Their gambling establishment with roulette soon became known throughout Europe.

In 1873, all clubs in Europe were closed except for Monaco, where one of the brothers, Francois, was staying. He received official permission to open a casino and, as a result, became the king of the gambling world. Charles the Third, ruling in Monaco, did not prohibit gambling. He considered that the taxes received from the casino would help the state.

The prince was right. The treasury received several million francs. Blanc took upon himself all the expenses of the state: he maintained officials, the government and the army.

French emigrants fleeing the revolution in America brought a roulette with them. The locals greeted the game with enthusiasm. It became so popular that even rich people went bankrupt because of it.

In the 19th century, a special slot machine appeared that allowed players to enjoy the game without having to travel to the capital of the gambling world, Las Vegas.
