The head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev, instructed to strengthen control over migrants and crime prevention in the region to improve public safety. The decision was made against the background of the recent high-profile murder of a resident of Yakutsk, committed by a native of Tajikistan.

“We will firmly suppress any attempt to destabilize our society,” Mr. Nikolaev wrote in his Telegram channel. According to him, the leadership of the republic and local security forces will need to study the legality of migrants’ stay in Yakutia.

The reason for the order from the head of the republic was an incident that occurred on January 21 in Yakutsk. By data Investigative Committee, a conflict occurred between two men, during which a native of Tajikistan, who has Russian citizenship, “inflicted several stab wounds to the chest” of a 26-year-old resident of the city. After some time, the victim died.

A native of Tajikistan was charged under Part 1 of Art. 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“murder”). The court sent him under arrest until March 21. Residents of Yakutsk took to several unauthorized street protests, demanding that the criminal be punished. Three participants in one of the rallies were arrested by court order for five to six days, and another 23 protesters were fined.

Aisen Nikolaev promised that the security forces would thoroughly investigate this crime and also check the circumstances of the suspect’s receipt of a Russian passport. He also called on the residents of Yakutia “not to succumb to provocations” and not to go to uncoordinated protests. He announced attempts by unnamed “provocateurs” to “incite conflict, sow hostility, divide and embitter” residents of the region.
