Anti-Doping Disciplinary Committee to make a decision soon
The President of the World Anti-Doping Agency Vitold Banka reminded: we know the date of the hearings on the Valieva case, we will wait for the conclusions, and then we will decide what to do. He also clarified that WADA is following this issue very carefully, and last month I noted the need to speed up the process.
After the Olympics, we knew only one thing: an investigation was underway regarding the positive test of the figure skater. How is it being done? All those involved are questioned, the circumstances requiring verification are clarified. In RUSADA, the veil was slightly lifted: polls, interviews, searching for information in available sources, using information available to anti-doping organizations (for example, biological passport data). And they repeated: the details are not subject to premature publicity. There is no official deadline for completing the investigation.
And yet the final (at least in voicing the decision on our part) is already close. RUSADA completed the investigation. But now the disciplinary anti-doping committee must have its say – following the results of the hearings (a body that conducts activities independent of RUSADA).
How does this happen? Hearings are unlikely to be long, they prefer not to stretch, most often they take place during the day. Eight people (lawyers, doctors) who are members of the committee but do not work for RUSADA, after listening to the versions of what happened from the agency, the athlete and his representatives, will decide whether Kamila is guilty or not.
When it will be? Dates announced approximate: in late September – early October. The RUSADA investigation itself has been completed, but now the procedure for “processing the results in accordance with international standards and requirements” is underway.
Russian figure skaters won the team tournament at the Beijing Olympics, but, as you know, there was no award, it was postponed due to the news of Kamila’s positive test. Medals all this time are waiting not only for our athletes, but also for the Americans, who became the second, and the Japanese. The Americans have already stated that they should receive gold, the Japanese – silver, and the fourth Canadians – bronze. And Sarah Hirshland, CEO of the US National Olympic Committee, is confident that this is “still an outrageous situation.” And he expresses fear that “there will be hearings, then, perhaps, there will be appeals, I’m afraid everything will drag on for a long time.”
We want Camila to be acquitted definitively, without doubt or distrust. But this is hardly possible at one moment, here the American is right. Interested parties – and these are the ISU, WADA and the International Olympic Committee – can appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport the decision made by our anti-doping committee. To do this, organizations will have 21 days after receiving the case documents. Then the conclusions of CAS can also be challenged. But I don’t even want to look that far.
Camila is included in the ISU anti-doping pool for the season. True, with strict conditions. Athletes from the registered pool, which included Valieva (and not the extended one), need to indicate daily the hour during which they can be found by doping officers. Fail is a flag for a missed test. Three flags within 12 months – Disqualification for an anti-doping rule violation.
Kamila Valieva is training, she has new programs. The screenings will take place on September 24-25 in Moscow, Valieva was on the preliminary lists. But the FFKKR promised to publish the final lists of participants on the eve of the event. If the hearings of the disciplinary anti-doping committee take place, as it was reported, then we will probably find out the decision in the case of Camila after the test skates of our skaters.
