According to the agency Bloomberg, the head of the US NSA cybersecurity division, Rob Joyce, said at the Silverado Accelerator conference in California that the TikTok application is a Chinese “Trojan horse” and represents a long-term strategic problem for US cybersecurity. At the same time, a representative of the intelligence community gave a fairly exhaustive list of claims to the application, focusing on the propaganda component, and not mentioning the thesis discussed by Western media about the exclusive “spy” capabilities of the application for gadgets.
In short, the claims of American pros to the Chinese TikTok are almost the same as their Russian counterparts to the social networks of the American extremist Meta banned in the Russian Federation.
“Why did you need to bring the Trojan horse to the fortress? Why would you implement this in the US in an environment where the Chinese can manipulate the data to either intentionally show something to our population — socially divisive content — and remove what makes it look bad?” Joyce asked the audience rhetorically.
As reminds RBCTikTok’s chief executive officer recently said during a US congressional hearing that the app poses no greater threat than YouTube and Instagram (the latter’s owner, Meta Platform Inc., has been designated an extremist organization in Russia and banned).
Meanwhile, a number of NATO governments have already banned TikTok in one form or another for use on the official gadgets of military and civilian officials, citing the unique ability of the social network to collect personal information.
