The head of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Dana White, canceled a press conference before the tournament between the Swedish fighter of Chechen origin Khamzat Chimaev and the American athlete Nate Diaz a few minutes before it began. The reason was a fight between the fighters and members of their teams. This is the first such case in league history.
As writes MMA Weekly, Mr. White said that the skirmish took place in a room under the stands. It all started with a conflict between Khamzat Chimaev and American fighter Kevin Holland.
The UFC president said that “a very strange situation has occurred” and that the right decision is not to hold a press conference for safety reasons. He also asked the audience for forgiveness. “This is the first such case in the history of the UFC. This is the right decision for everyone’s safety,” said Dana White.
According to media reports, the cause of the fight could be mockery by Kevin Holland over the Chechen fighter. Holland turned to Khamzat Chimaev with a proposal to “cut this clown’s beard.”
The fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz in the welterweight division will take place on September 10. This fight will be the last for the American under the current contract with the organization.
