Patriarch Kirill said there should be no “annoying luxury” in the life of priests

Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus’ Kirill, speaking on Wednesday with a report at the Bishops’ Conference, said that priests need to live in some kind of isolation from society, transmits his words RG.RU

The patriarch said that there was no need to force the clergy to go everywhere in a cassock, and the wives of priests – in clothes “to the toes.”

In our time, as the primate of the Russian Orthodox Church noted, “in some circumstances it may be more appropriate for a priest to wear neat, particular clothes.”

A cleric should not be condemned if, for example, he goes to the pool with his children or to the theater with friends in clothes appropriate for these places.

However, as the patriarch emphasized, “in any situation, the behavior and speech of a clergyman should in no case compromise a clergyman.” He recalled that priests are always and everywhere called to show a “pure and good life”, which is no less important for preaching the Gospel than a wise word.

Also, the clergyman has the right to adequately equip his life.

At the same time, as Patriarch Kirill noted, “this should not turn into a way of life, in terms of material level, demonstratively contrasting with the way of life of the flock.”

He also said that “there should be no frilly and annoying luxury.” Especially now, when the whole country limits itself, sacrificing for the sake of others.

In addition, the arrogant behavior of a clergyman is also unacceptable. He must restrain himself from acts incompatible with holy orders.
