In Russian schools, the workload is high, and children spend a lot of time doing homework, Olga Vasilyeva, president of the Russian Academy of Education (RAO), told RIA Novosti. She called the lack of functional literacy the main problem.
According to Ms. Vasilyeva, students spend “an enormous amount of time” doing their homework. “I always repeat: there are two reasons for this – this is the lack of functional literacy, that is, “we can’t understand what we see and read,” “we can’t convey in a thesis what is written in the textbook,” the head of the Russian Academy of Education is convinced.
She cited the lack of “opportunities to switch” among children as another problem. Olga Vasilyeva believes that schoolchildren often lack “internal and moral relaxation” and they need to be distracted, for example, by sports or creativity. “It is very important for us today to teach schoolchildren to read texts correctly. This will speed up, first of all, the preparation of homework. Secondly, there should be a change in occupations, including switching to creative leisure, ”says the head of the Russian Academy of Education.
During a speech in the State Duma in mid-November, Minister of Education Sergei Kravtsov called the creation of new textbooks “an extremely important issue.” According to him, the authorities “are obliged to protect schoolchildren from pseudo-values by building reliable defense lines here.” He noted that the ministry “is closely engaged in the educational component of the educational process.”
