The head of the National Bank of Poland: Germany wants to return the “former” lands within the Polish borders

Germany plans to “reclaim former lands” within Poland’s borders. Such a statement did Chairman of the National Bank of Poland Adam Glapinski in an interview with Gazeta Polska.
“If earlier it was about the merger of the German states or the absorption of the GDR, that is, the former Soviet occupation zone, then from the moment this task was completed, it was about the return in one form or another of their former lands, which are now within the Polish borders,” said Glapinsky.
Glapinski believes that this could happen if the former prime minister (from 2007 to 2014), the leader of the opposition Civic Platform party, Donald Tusk, comes to power in Poland. The next parliamentary elections in Poland will take place in 2023.
He noted that Germany has been taking care of its national interests “for several decades.” According to the head of the National Bank, the scenario of “land return” became possible after the UK left the EU. Glapinsky also said that Berlin is seeking to subjugate the countries between Germany and Russia. He clarified that the FRG had such a “perception of a balance in the Europe of the future.”
According to the decision made in July 1945 at the Potsdam Conference, following the results of the Second World War, the eastern regions of Germany, namely part of West Prussia, part of Silesia, East Pomerania and East Brandenburg, the Free City of Danzig (the modern Polish name Gdansk), went to Poland, district of Szczecin.
Germany also had to pay reparations to Poland for the damage caused to the country during the Second World War. In 2017, a special commission of the Polish Sejm on reparations estimated the damage at $48.8 billion. After that, the amount was adjusted several times, as a result, it grew to $850 billion.
In July 2022, the head of Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, said that he “may not live” to receive war reparations from Germany. He recalled that on September 1, the country will provide a report on losses during the war and will again name the amount of reparations. In Germany, this issue is considered closed. In 2021, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the situation “legally settled.”
