The aggravation of the situation with forest fires in the Central Federal District is connected not only with weather conditions, but also with arson, said Alexander Kozlov, head of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources, at a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The head of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Russian Federation Alexander Kurenkov noted that there are not enough all-terrain vehicles to extinguish fires in the Ryazan region.
“What is happening in the Central Federal District is caused not only by dry thunderstorms, hot weather and lack of precipitation. There are facts of arson, we saw it today in the Ryazan region, we are now working with the bodies of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, and accordingly the documents have been submitted,” the minister said at a meeting on the situation with wildfires in Russia.
Mr. Kozlov noted that currently 104 forest fires continue to operate in 18 regions of Russia. About 7.5 thousand employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia and Moscow firefighters, as well as 16 aviation units are involved in extinguishing fires in the Ryazan region. “According to Roshydromet, the smoke from the Nizhny Novgorod fires did not go and is not going towards Moscow; according to the wind rose, it comes from the Ryazan region,” Mr. Kozlov added.
Minister of Emergency Situations of Russia Alexander Kurenkov also spoke at the meeting with the President of Russia. He told Vladimir Putin that there were not enough caterpillar vehicles to localize the fires in the Ryazan region. “The use of off-road tracked vehicles shows its high efficiency in fighting forest fires. Unfortunately, we often note its lack in the field, which reduces the ability of the ground group to localize fires in a timely manner,” Mr. Kurenkov explained.
He also noted that heavy engineering equipment from the rescue centers of the Russian Emergencies Ministry was transferred to the Ryazan region, with the help of which more than 25 km of mineralized strips were laid.
President Putin at the beginning of the meeting noted that the abnormally hot weather has repeatedly caused the largest natural fires. He said that the fight against fires requires the involvement of large-scale resources, since it is hampered by many factors, including the drying up of rivers.
In August, several forests and peat bogs caught fire in Russia due to abnormal heat and lack of precipitation. Rosleskhoz said that a difficult situation with wildfires is developing throughout the Central Federal District. Fires were recorded in the Rostov, Nizhny Novgorod and Ryazan regions. Over the past day, the area of forest fires in the Ryazan region increased by a quarter, up to 11.7 thousand hectares. At the moment, a state of emergency has been introduced in this region. Smoke from fires reached Moscow: smog and fumes in the capital hold on from last week. Yesterday, August 23, this year, the Russian government created Commission for the elimination of forest fires, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko.
