The head of the Ministry of Education and Science Falkov urged to seriously transform the magistracy

The Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia, Valery Falkov, said that the magistracy does not fulfill its purpose in the country’s universities. He believes that major changes are needed in the field of magistracy.

“In general, unfortunately, the magistracy has been opened in many places, it does not properly fulfill its purpose, and serious changes need to be carried out, including, of course, the quality of the magistracy should be significantly improved,”— informed Mr. Falkov during the session of the St. Petersburg Economic Forum (SPIEF).

The minister also noted that in the new system of higher education, the magistracy will not be present in all areas, but all graduates of the basic level will be able to enter it, he notes. Now the master’s degree is available only to graduates of the bachelor’s degree.

May 31 in the department called the right idea to get away from the practice of teaching students in the master’s program who had previously completed a bachelor’s degree in another direction. The ministry clarified that for some more universal specialties it is worth considering exceptions.

In June 2022 at the Ministry of Education and Science declaredthat all Russian universities were excluded from the Bologna process. The Russian authorities decided to abandon the Bologna system (which implies the division of the educational process into four years of undergraduate and two years of master’s) and create their own. It was assumed that the new system of higher education would introduce a specialty in the exact sciences.
