The share of Russians using VPN, after growing in the summer, returned to spring values, these services in Russia “do not take root,” Maksut Shadayev, head of the Ministry of Digital Development, said at a meeting in the State Duma, transmits Interfax.
“In general, VPNs in the country are not yet taking root in our country: the share of VPN traffic at some point increased in the summer, and now it has returned to spring indicators,” he said.
Shadayev explained that a system was created in Russia to block access to resources that violate the law within the framework of the law on the sovereign Internet, a significant part of the traffic already passes through it.
Earlier in November, the Ministry of Digital Transformation demanded that a number of state companies, state corporations and large banks report on the use of VPN services. In a letter sent to government agencies and banks, the ministry asked “as soon as possible” to clarify which VPN services they use or plan to use, as well as for what purposes they do it and in what locations.
As previously reported, Russia in March-July took second place in the world in terms of VPN downloads, second only to India.
