International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach said that world sport cannot be isolated from Russian athletes, despite Ukraine’s calls to do so. According to him, this is contrary to the values of the IOC.
Thomas Bach added that the IOC provided the opportunity for athletes from Russia to compete in individual and neutral status. He noted that earlier the IOC gave recommendations to international federations to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete without using the national symbols of their countries.
“This is the system that we now see working at the World Championships and the European Championships. The Ukrainian side is not 100% happy about this, but they accepted it, because this is an opportunity for Ukrainian athletes to qualify for the Olympic Games.
