The head of the European Council promised Zelensky to discuss Ukraine’s accession to the EU at the end of the year

The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the prospects for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union at the end of the year. Michel’s representative told reporters about this during the G7 summit.

“On the prospect of Ukraine’s accession to the EU, President Michel thanked President Zelensky for the ongoing judicial reforms and the fight against corruption, and reaffirmed his intention to bring this issue to the European Council before the end of the year,” Michel’s representative said (quoted from “Interfax”).

According to him, we are talking about EU assistance to Ukraine. Michel supports the preparation of a new macro-financial economic package for Ukraine, but only after 2023. Military support for Ukraine is being strengthened “through the supply of ammunition and the creation of a coalition on fighter jets.”

In addition, Michel told Zelensky that the EU fully supports the Ukraine peace plan initiative.

The main issue at the G7 summit was further support for Ukraine, as well as issues of economic security and climate protection. The G7 countries have already announced new joint restrictions against Russia – we are talking about diamonds. In addition, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reported on the effect of the already imposed sanctions: according to her, the EU sanctions since the start of the military operation in Ukraine have led to a reduction in exports from European countries to Russia by 55%, and imports by 60%.

The new military assistance to Ukraine in the general statement of the G7 is not specified. According to John Kirby, strategic communications coordinator at the US National Security Council, the possible delivery of F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine is not on the summit agenda, but “the topic may arise in the margins.”
