The head of the EC called the goal of sanctions to plunge the Russian economy into a long recession

EU sanctions against Russia are aimed at plunging the Russian economy into recession for a long time, because of the restrictions, the Russian Federation is deprived of critical technologies. This statement was made by the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, during her speech at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos.

“We are imposing the strongest sanctions against the Russian Federation, which plunge the Russian economy into recession for decades, and its industry is deprived of modern and critical technologies,” she said (quote according to TASS).

Against the backdrop of the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, the EU has already adopted nine packages of sanctions against the Russian Federation. Restrictions have affected many sectors of the economy, including energy, high-tech sector, aviation, banking, mining, automotive, etc.

Last time the EU expanded sanctions against the Russian Federation on December 16. The ninth package of sanctions included new restrictions on Russian banks, exports of dual-use goods and technologies, as well as a ban on investments in the energy and mining sectors of the Russian Federation. An exception was made only for the extraction of minerals critical to the EU.

At the same time, the Russian authorities have repeatedly said that the West failed to achieve its goal and bring down the country’s economy. On December 15, during a meeting of the Council for Strategic Development and National Projects, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared about unjustified calculations to “crush” the Russian economy with the help of sanctions. According to him, Western countries failed to collapse the ruble and “provoke destructive inflation” due to the concentration of Russian business and the solidarity of the country’s citizens.

On December 22, during a press conference, Putin notedthat Russia passed 2022 “quite confidently”. He added that at the moment there are no concerns that the current situation will interfere with the implementation of plans for the future, including for 2023.

January 11, the head of state once again emphasizedthat nothing happened to Russia that “the enemy predicted” for her. Putin pointed to the composure of the citizens of the Russian Federation and their readiness for challenges.
