The head of the DPR: the date of the referendum will be determined after the liberation of the republic

The date of the referendum on joining the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) to Russia will be announced after the complete liberation of the territory of the region. This statement was made by the head of the DPR Denis Pushilin.

He noted that now the main efforts are aimed at liberating the territory of the DPR. “As soon as it is released within constitutional boundaries, we will all know the date of the referendum very quickly,” said Pushilin (quote according to RIA Novosti). The head of the republic stressed that the DPR already has experience in holding a referendum.

In May 2014, referendums on self-determination of the DPR and LPR were held. Then 89.07% and 96.2% of the inhabitants of the regions voted for the independence of the republics, respectively.

In February 2022, Russia recognized the DPR and LPR within the borders of the regions. And two days later, a special operation began in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin called the protection of the inhabitants of Donbass, as well as the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine, its goals.

Formerly Pushilin toldthat the Russian Armed Forces, together with units of the people’s militia of the DPR and the forces of the LPR, managed to liberate about half of the entire territory of the DPR. “266 settlements [освобождены] to date. In percentage terms, this is about half. But if we take the number of people living in these territories, then we have already exceeded half of them very seriously,” the head of the republic specified.
