The reason for the mass death of seals in the Caspian Sea could be oxygen starvation, suggested the head of Rosprirodnadzor Svetlana Radionova, speaking on the air of the Rossiya-24 TV channel.
“We don’t see mechanical damage, we don’t see damage from nets or other fishing gear, so scientists are now engaged in autopsy of animals. According to preliminary data, we see traces of hypoxia, such a change in the body of an animal caused by oxygen starvation, ”quotes “RIA News” Mrs Radionova.
There are no signs of environmental pollution in the form of any heavy fractions in the water, she said, but detailed results of the studies will not appear until the end of this week.
According to the Ministry of Natural Resources of Dagestan, 2,500 dead seals have already been found along the Caspian coast in the territory of the republic.
How informed Kommersant, at the beginning of June 2021, Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries Vasily Sokolov said that the cause of death of about 90% of the seals found in the previous few months in Dagestan was asphyxia as a result of gas emissions from the seabed.
