The head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, visited Makhachkala airport and assessed the damage caused during the riots and pogroms that occurred the day before after the plane arrived from Israel. According to the head of the republic, the airport will be restored in the coming days.
According to message administration of the head of Dagestan, “minor damage to equipment” was caused in the international terminal of the airport, and “everything for the stable operation” of the complex was preserved in the domestic flight terminal.
“Today, the airport director and I visited all the points that could be problematic after yesterday’s events. I think that within a maximum of two or three days, all the functionality of our airport will be restored. We will start operating flights again, including international ones,” commented Sergei Melikov.
Based on the results of assessing the damage caused to the Makhachkala airport, Sergei Melikov spent meeting of the operational headquarters. Representatives of the law enforcement block and heads of municipalities took part in it. During the meeting, the head of Dagestan emphasized that the actions of “vandals who broke glass at their own airport” could not in any way affect the situation in the Gaza Strip.
On the evening of October 29, hundreds of protesters gathered at Makhachkala airport to prevent Israeli citizens traveling on a flight from Tel Aviv from entering the country. Some of the demonstrators first broke into the terminal, and later onto the airport runway, where the plane was parked at that moment. Security forces began to detain protesters. Total reported about 150 active participants in the riots, 60 of whom were detained pending clarification of the circumstances. During the riots suffered more than 20 people, including nine police officers. The airport is scheduled to reopen on October 31.
