The head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, condemned the protests against the arrival of refugees from Israel in the republic, which took place on Saturday evening in Makhachkala and Khasavyurt. The reason for them was fake information from foreign Telegram channels, he believes.

In Khasavyurt, late in the evening of October 28, several hundred people gathered at the Flamingo Hotel to demand the eviction of Israeli Jews allegedly housed there. The police explained to the leaders of the protesters that there were no refugees in the hotel and allowed them to verify this for themselves, after which the crowd dispersed. In Makhachkala, several dozen young people gathered in the evening on the main square and chanted slogans exalting Allah. Calls continue to spread on social networks to “check hotels” in the cities of Dagestan and “to unitely meet” “uninvited guests” arriving from Israel at the airport.

“In this difficult time for all of us, those who do not share our feelings are trying to take advantage of what is happening, but are only trying to benefit – to shake up the situation in our country,” he wrote in his Telegram channel Sergei Melikov. “The events of Saturday evening in Makhachkala and Khasavyurt are a vivid example of this.” Mr. Melikov also noted the prompt and professional work of employees of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs and municipal authorities.

“Our prayers are with the people of Palestine today,” he concluded. “For every hardship, surely there comes relief. It has always been so, and it will be so today!”

Republican Ministry of Internal Affairs clarified also in his Telegram channel that the information disseminated online about the detention of vehicles with Palestinian flags pasted on is not true. “Car owners can put any symbols on their vehicles, taking into account compliance with current legislation and the feelings of believers,” the department explained.
