To be honest, I didn’t want to write about the latest matches of the Russian national football team. For different reasons.
It is clear that after the exclusion of not only the main team of the country, but also all other Russian football teams and clubs from absolutely all international tournaments, it is difficult for Russian football players to explain why they still need to play friendly matches with foreign colleagues. At the risk of getting injuries that could knock them out of the national championship for a long time. Where money is paid and medals are awarded.
It is also clear that it is also necessary to assemble a national team and let it play with those foreign teams who still agree, without fear of sanctions. Even if these matches are not taken into account in the rankings of the International Football Federation (FIFA). Because any sanctions end sooner or later. And the prefabricated one is like a blast furnace. If you put it out, you can’t light it again. Just build a new one.
That’s why we played at the last September training camp twice with the Egyptian Olympic team and once with the Qatar team.
The results are not the most encouraging. With the Egyptians there is a draw and a defeat. Draw with Qatar 1:1. True, we didn’t play well with them before. But the matches took place, and they undoubtedly gave some food for thought about the state of our main team and the level of skill of the players called up to it. Moreover, this time the coaching staff invited as many as 49 players from 14 RPL and Monaco clubs to the training camp.
One could talk about this if something else had not come to the fore, or rather, something else has come to the fore.
We are talking about the team’s head coach Valery Karpin. Who, concurrently, also coaches Rostov.
After the game with Qatar, which ended with a score of 1:1 on the evening of September 12, Valery Georgievich made, to put it mildly, an unexpected statement.
“Everyone says that the level of the championship has fallen, you don’t need to watch the national team for that. There is also a problem with motivation, but it is not the main one. We need to continue to work with these players, we need to motivate them as a coach. You can criticize the team. Leaving RPL? Anyone who can leave, leave, I give advice,” RIA Novosti quotes Karpin.
This is where we need to stop. Take a deep breath and repeat what Karpin said to yourself again. Because an episode from the famous film “The Lord of the Rings” pops up in my head, willy-nilly, when Gandalf shouted to the hobbits and other characters: “Run, you fools!” Only we don’t live in magical Middle-earth. And in a very real world. And when the head coach of the main football team advises young football players to flee Russia, then the conclusions about his suitability for the position held should already be made by the authorized bodies.
Yes, many criticize the level of our football and the level of our national team. Deserved and undeserved. But isn’t it the task of the coaching staff to find this very motivation and instill this same confidence in the national team players who are defending the honor of our country. Because the main team cannot have easy matches. Otherwise, the blast furnace of our football will go out.
But this is not the first such statement by Karpin. He has already said before that he does not hold on to his place in the national team. Forgive me. Got it. They chided in a friendly manner and patted me on the shoulder. This time we will also smile: “Well, I said too much, who doesn’t?”
It happens to anyone, maybe. Not with the head coach of the main team.
The obvious facts cannot be denied. Russian sport, like some other areas of our life, is in a very difficult situation. Illegal total sanctions, exclusion from international tournaments, completely wild demands to abandon everything that connects athletes with their country – this is only the tip of a huge iceberg of Russophobia that has overwhelmed many international sports federations and organizations led by the International Olympic Committee.
All the more valuable is every tournament, every competition in which our teams take part and to which foreign athletes and teams come. Each victory gives strength to continue working, gives hope that sooner or later this Russophobic obscurantism will end.
Why repeat these simple truths? Then, it is precisely at this turning point in history that one can see who is worth what and how he feels about his work and the honor given to him to lead our national teams. It is honor, since it is not enough for these people to be outstanding athletes and specialists, they also need to be patriots. An example for the younger generation of our athletes. Pretentious? Not at all.
