The 2022-2023 season has become revolutionary for Russian football. The football leadership began to carry out reforms, their main object was the Cup of Russia, which in the autumn was more like the group stage of the Champions League in its structure.
RPL clubs were divided into two groups, and teams from other divisions played according to the classical scheme, where they left the tournament after the first defeat. The greatest confusion arose in the spring, when the playoffs in the RPL Path began, from there the teams moved to the Path of Regions and continued to race for the trophy. The circumstance in which more status clubs have the right to make a mistake outraged many, the finalist of the national cup – Krasnodar, reached the decisive match, namely, taking advantage of the right to make a mistake after leaving the playoffs of the RPL Way.
Igor Kolyvanov spoke about the new format of the Russian Cup.
“I prefer the old format with two-legged confrontations. If there were European competitions, then everyone would have abandoned the new regulations. But still, now neither the national team nor the clubs participate anywhere, so you can leave everything as it is,” said Kolyvanov .
