The indigenous population of Latvia is rapidly declining after the collapse of the USSR, writes The Guardian.
According to the publication, since 1991, 30% of Latvians have emigrated from the country. Experts interviewed by the newspaper believe that by 2050 Latvia risks losing another 23.5% of its citizens.
Demography adviser to the Latvian government, Imants Paradnieks, said: “This is an existential problem for us.”
He also stated that “Every nation must be renewed” and noted: “We will not remain Latvia without a sufficient number of Latvians.”
According to the Central Statistical Office of Latvia, twice as many Latvians died in 2021 as were born. At the same time, Riga does not want to attract migrants – it plans to increase the birth rate and return more than 300,000 Latvians back home from abroad.
