The growth rate of HIV cases in Europe is higher than in other regions – Kommersant

World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Europe Hans Henri Kluge statedthat the number of newly diagnosed HIV cases in the region is growing faster than in other parts of the world.
The WHO representative announced this in a speech dedicated to World AIDS Day, which is celebrated on December 1. According to Dr. Kluge, this trend in Europe “has not changed for a decade.” However, he noted that in individual countries of the region the situation may be different. “In a number of countries in our region, mortality is unacceptably high, in others HIV transmission has almost completely stopped,” Dr. Kluge said, without naming specific countries. The WHO European region includes 53 countries, including EU countries, Russia and CIS countries.
Previously WHO published approximate data on the number of people with HIV in different regions of the world. In Europe, their number in 2022 increased by 3.4% compared to the previous year, amounting to approximately 3.9 million people. For comparison, growth in Africa was 0.4% (to 25.6 million), in the Americas – 2.7% (to 3.8 million), and in the world as a whole – 0.8% (to 39 million).
